1. Before all, can you introduce Coltan Leech to pogoslam's readers?
A: Coltan Leech was founded at the beginning of 2004 by myself ( Ferenc )
and Fabian ( both guitar ). In the summer of 2004 our pack was
completed by Bastian(drums), Lego(bass) and finally Bruce ( vocals ).
We started songwriting and played our first concerts. In april 2005 we
recorded our first demo "catacombs". Unfortunately Bruce had to quit
in may 2005. At the moment we are putting the band into order, to move on
with renewed forces and we are promoting "catacombs". We don't like
to limit us by genres. So I would say we try create a dark, heavy, atmospheric
und unique sound. ;)

2. Which bands are the Coltan Leech's main influences? What
is the musical direction you took with "Catacombs"?
A: All of the bandmembers have a very diverse music taste. It ranges from
black metal to electronica, and from experimental hip-hop to grindcore. But bands
that influenced us all, I would say are Botch, Will Haven, Meshuggah and the Deftones.
We never planed to sound like this or that. From the the beginning, our focus was
to create a sound that we all like and that has an own character. Sure you can't reinvent
the wheel, but you can create your own little universe. ;) Personally "Catacombs" for me
is a reflection of the evolutionary progress in our sound and songwriting at that
time. It's our first recording, so we didn't thought about a concept or a special
musical direction. It's just four songs representing us.

3. How do you record "Catacombs"? Is it finally the album you were waiting for?
A: We wired our rehearsal-room up as a little recording studio. A friend of us who is a
sound engineer and also plays in a black metal band(Dark Fortress) helped us out and
recorded it. Sure we waited for it, every musician wants to record his own stuff,
but I wouldn't call it a epic masterpiece or something. ;)
We are more focused now on the new ep that we will record next year.

4. How was the audience reaction when "Catacombs" had been published?
A: The ep wasn't really released. We don't have a record deal or a distribution. But the
reaction of friends, other musicians and online magazines was mostly positive.
It hadn't the purpose to be spread everywhere, "catacombs" is more a promo thing.
Furthermore the only possibility to record something this year was in april. A problem
was the departure of our singer, so it wouldn't make much sense to send it to record
labels or a lot of magazines. The departure somehow undermined the whole promo
aspect of the "release".

5. The German hardcore scene is badly-known in France, does the scene work?
What are the main german bands you can recommend to us?
A: We are not part of a scene, but we mostly sympathize with the hardcore "scene".
What we don't like is small-minded and dogmatic elitism. Sadly these things exist in
all subcultures. But I don't want to form an opinion about the function or dysfunction
of the "scene", 'cause I'm not really part of it. Bands we recommend are The Ocean(now on
Metalblade), Heaven Shall Burn, Paint the Town Red(RIP), Llynch and Droon. :)

6. Since "Catacombs"'s publication, your singer left the band. Why?
A: He left mainly due his study commitments, but we also had musical and
personal differences. So it was a combination of different things.

7. You're currently working on your next demo. What are the main musical changes in
Coltan Leech with the separation of the singer? Did you thought to change the name of the band?
A: We didn't find an equivalent replacement for him, so logically our guitarist is now the
only voice left and that voice is screaming. I think our sound has developed into a more
atmospheric, heavy and complex direction. The new songs oscillate between four and eight
minutes and likely the new ep will have more a "conceptual feeling". In general I think we
don't stray to far away from songs like "savant" or "cataphiles", but we'll expand
both melody and brutality. And no, we never thought of changing our name.

8. I hope you made many concerts in Germany (or maybe away?),
what was your best souvenir? and the worst?

A: Sadly we were limited by the leaving of our singer, so we couldn't tour or play many
concerts. We were focused on writing new material for both live performance and the
new recording. Sorry I can't remember any great positive or negative souvenirs, but
every gig was fun. Maybe if you ask again in a year or so we'll have some stories. ;)
We'll try to tour much more next year. Maybe we can play also outside of germany.
But I don't know, without connections it's complicated. We'll see. It would be sweet
to play some concerts in france. :)

9. Do you have a question to answer I forget to ask you?
A: No questions about the great comforts of bavarian culture? ;)
If you're interested, you can listen to the whole ep on myspace
( http://www.myspace.com/coltancatacombs ) and order it through
our homepage( it's just 4€ ).

10. I let you say the "word of the end"...
A: Thanks for the interview, thanks for the interest we appreciate it! :)
And look out for the next cd in march!
